Taylor Swift made Grammy history last night when she became the first female solo artist ever to win the prestigious “Album of the Year” award twice, winning for her fifth album “1989” at the 58th annual ceremony, six years after winning it for her second album, “Fearless”.
Taylor, who opened the show with a performance of “Out of the Woods”, had her first victory in the category when she was just 20, becoming the youngest winner ever, and her second sees her become the youngest 2 time winner since Stevie Wonder (in 1975, before Taylor was even born!), who was on hand at the Grammys to present a Grammy to one of Taylors best friends, Ed Sheeran!
It was Ed’s fourth year nominated, and first win, so both halves of one of our favourite friendships are ending on a high before embarking on the temporary breaks from music they’ve both discussed in the past.
Despite being nominated against Ed, and his victory meaning her loss, Taylor looked overcome with glee when her friend, collaborator and one time tour-buddy was announced as the winner, and the pair shared a hug before Ed went on stage to collect his award!
Taylor, who saw off stiff competition from The Weeknd (whom she shared a stage with at the 1989 tour) and Kendrick Lamar (With whom she collaborated on a remix of Bad Blood that shot to number one), used her victory to subtly repute claims made by Kanye West, who this week released a song in which he claims to have made her famous.
“I want to say to all the young women out there: there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. But if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when, you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you’ll know it was you and the people who love you who put you there and that will be the greatest feeling in the world.”
Taylor also became the first artist to ever win “Best Country Album” and “Best Pop Album” at the Grammys, again for Fearless and 1989, after gradually breaking the barrier in to Pop music over the course of her career, and later declaring 1989 her “First documented, official pop album”. The album stormed to number one, and also scored her the accolade of being the only artist ever to sell 1 million copies of an album in the first week on three separate occasions.
Album of the year and Best Pop Album were 2 of 3 Grammys Taylor took home last night, the third being “Best Music Video” for Bad Blood, directed by Joseph Kahn.
Swift and Selena Gomez, who was her date for the big event and co-starred in the video, shared a celebratory video on Instagram of the moment they found out Bad Blood had scooped the Grammy.
1989 might have been released in 2014, but Taylor’s still smashing all sorts of records with it 2 years later!
